Department of Biochemistry

Inception and Growth

The Department of Biochemistry was started in the year 1999 with one undergraduate course and an intake of nine students. The Post-graduate department was started in the year 2001 with an intake of 22 students. The main goal of the department is to produce students of high caliber in terms of subject knowledge and technical skills in B.Sc and M.Sc Biochemistry courses. The department encourages students to enter in PG courses and in research institutes. It also initiates research activities for students and encourages staff to get funds from other organizations.

The main objectives of the department are:
. To complete the syllabus (theory and practicals) as per O.U rules
. To conduct mid term and pre-final exams and evaluate the students performance
. To conduct student seminars in current topics in science
. To encourage students to present their ideas in new fields and participate in various intra collegiate and inter college scientific competitions
. To arrange for guest lectures by eminent scientists from research institutes and universities
. To initiate research projects
. To have placements for students in industries, including pharmaceutical and biotech companies

Career Prospects

The students from the department have settled in different careers. These include research, teaching, marketing and industry. Students have registered for Ph.D in institutes like Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad, Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad and University of Hyderabad. Students are either pursuing or have completed their research in some of the American universities. Some of the alumni members have completed their M.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai. Our students are also well placed in different organizations like Indian Immunologicals, Ranbaxy, Shantha Biotech and Reddy Labs in R&D and marketing. The students have left their mark in teaching field as well.
