The department was established in 1993with the introduction of Botany as part of Micro Biology, Botany & Chemistry course. The Subject of Genetics was intoduced in 1994 as Genetics, Botany & Chemistry course. In 1996 Microbiology, Genetics & Chemistry course was introduced. The department grew in 2002 with the inclusion of Biotechnology as part of Biotechnology, Biochemistry & Chemistry course. Biotechnology, Genetics & Chemistry combination was introduced in 2007. The department proviedes short term projects for U.G students. The various projects undertaken by the department are: Alkaloid extraction from Medicinal Plants Karyotyping of Chemical Factory Workers Phenotyping of Haptoglobins |

Inculcate Scientific Temperamnet among the students Motivates students for higher studies and research in the field of Genetics & Biotechnology. To instill Analytical skills and Logical thinking as problem solving approach in Genetics. To encourage the spirit of entrepreneurship in the field of Biotechnology Eco - Warriors - sensitize the students on environmental issues. |

| The Department consists of three spacious and well-equipped laboratories, to conduct the prescribed practicals in Botany, Genetics and Biotechnology. The Department also has a separate Plant Tissue Culture laboratory with all the necessary equipment and infrastructure required for the aseptic culture of plants. The students are provided the necessary environment to enhance their interest and aspect towards the subject by providing an excellent UG Library. It is stocked with books and Journals in various Scientific fields. The students are encouraged to utilize these facilities to enhance their scientific skills. | ||

The students of this department have always excelled in their chosen field of subject. The average pass percentage for students each year is close to 100%, with the majority (over 50%) scoring distinction in Botany, Genetics and Biotechnology. In 2011-12 100% results for Genetics Paper - III and about 96% for Paper- I, II & IV. 100% results in Biotechnology Paper II, III & IV. |

Ms. Ramya Sirisha (2012) has been selectd for summer research fellowship by The Indian Academy of Sciences at National Brain Research center, Manesar, Haryana. Ms. Vijay Sree (2012) has secured 19th Rank in Osmania University P.G entrance Examination. Mr. Limaangnen Pongener (2012) has joined for M.Sc (Marine Biology) in the University of Puducherry. Mr. v Shashank(2010) joined IMA at Lt. Col. Ms. Sivani Vellam (2009) has joined integrated Ph.D program in Molecular Genetics in JNCASR. Ms. Soumya Sree (2009) has joined in IIM Indore for Management Studies in field of Agriculture. Ms. Radha Girirajan (94-97) was awarded a Gold Medal in Botany, from Osmania University. Ms.Saraswati (MGC) has been selected to pursue her Master’s in IISC Banglore. |

In 2011, about 25 students out of 49 students have joined for P.G courses all over the country. Around 13 final year students have been placed in various companies through campus recruitement. In 2010, 60 out of 90 students have joined for P.g students in various Universities in India and Abroad and about 10 students have been placed in various companies through campus recruitement. |

Conferences and FDP's attended by the Faculty:Dr. Jyothi Nayar attended a National Conference on "Current Trends in Medicinal, Aromatic Plants and Plant Products" conducted by the department of Botany(U.G.C-SAP-III), Osmania University on 17th & 18th March, 2012. She also attended a Faculty deveopment program on "Emerging Trends in Life Sciences" organized by the department of Botany & Biotechnology, St.Pious X Degree & P.G College for Women on 9th September, 2011. Departmental Activities |

The Academic activities undertaken by the department includes Guest Lectures by eminent Scientists from various Research Institutes. The students are also encouraged to give seminars for better understanding of the subject and to improve their communication skills. Short term Projects are given to U.G students. The students are taken on field trips to various institutes like Institute of Genetics, CCMB, CDFD and companies like Shanta Biotech, Agri Biotech, Clintox Bioservices etc. greENERGY Club: The Department is environment conscious and believes in teaching its students the importance of protecting the environment for future generations. Since Aug 2005, every year the Department organizes an Environment based program called “ greEnergy” to promote environmental awareness. As a part of greEnergy, the department has started a Botanical garden in the campus and bio-diesel plants have been planted around the campus to promote a renewable source of energy. Every year greEnergy program is conducted with the full support of the college management and students taking extensive interest in all the events. The various events undertaken by the club are IYCN Projects Plantation Pollution Check Campaign Popularising Using of Clay Ganesh Idols Inter Collegiate Competitions - Poster Presentation, Micro Presentation, Wall Illustration etc. Eco Fest - Celebration of Pongal in the campus with competitions like Rangoli (Using Eco Friendly colors) and kite flying.
