The first of the extension lectures for the current academic year started with a talk in Statistics by our alumni, Mr. Mohit Dayal, Researcher, Applied Statistics and Computing Lab, ISB, who gave a thought provoking talk on ‘Careers in Statistics and Application of Statistics’. The examples given by him were day-to-day practical examples where statistics was applied like, defence services, Google search and Facebook, DNA related problems, etc. Students had a positive response and his talk kept their mind ticking………
The first of the series of extension lectures was organized on the 26th of July 2011. The guest speaker was Mrs.Seena Biju who spoke on ‘Sample size in Testing of Hypothesis’.
On the occasion of the birth anniversary of the great Indian Mathematician, Sir Srinivasa Ramanujan, a lecture was organized on the 22nd of December 2012. Prof.K.Satyanarayana, Retd. Professor from Osmania University & currently The Coordinator of Mathematics at Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies, IIIT, Hyderabad, gave a talk on 'Mathematicians & Mathematics'. Prof.K.Satyanarayana gave a power point presentation about Sir Srinivasa Ramanujan's life and his work in Mathematics.
After talking about Sir Ramanujan, Prof. Satyanarayana spoke about some results in Mathematics. He discussed some results in graph theory & the pigeon hole principle in detail. Prof.Satyanarayana also discussed the difference between conjecture, theorem, lemma & corollary in detail.
The third speaker, Dr.C.Goverdhan, an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Osmania University, gave a demonstrative lecture on 'Knowledge Computing Machine‘ on 27th Dec, 2012. The prime aim of the lecture was to introduce a search engine Wolframalpha’. This is a software for Mathematics developed by the physicist Prof.Wolfram. Using this search engine we can see the geometrical aspect of every problem. In this search engine, if we type a problem we get not only a detailed solution but also geometric figure which explains the geometrical aspect. It is impossible to draw the graph for many problems. Many examples were demonstrated by Dr.C.Goverdhan using the internet.
Mr.A.Venkateswara.Rao, Deputy Director (Actuarial) in Actuarial Department, Insurance Regulatory Authority, Hyderabad gave a talk on 24th July 2010 on Actuarial Science.
Mrs.Sridevi, currently working in Sristek Consulting Pvt Ltd as a senior biostatistician gave a presentation on 27th Sept 2010 on Application of statistics in Clinical Research.
Mrs.Seena Biju, ex-faculty member of Bhavans, currently affiliated to Manipal University, Dubai, working as a senior Lecturer in Statistics in the Dept. of Management Studies spoke on Six Sigma on 26th July 2010. Her talk was well received and appreciated by students.
