IMMUNOLOGY-VOYAGE FROM SEROLOGY TO MOLECULAR BIOLOGY IN HEALTH CARE

A two day national symposium on “Immunology-voyage from serology to molecular biology in health care was organized by Departments of Biochemistry and Microbiology, Bhavan’s Vivekananda College of Science, Humanities and Commerce, Sainikpuri, Secunderabad in collaboration with Indian Immunology Society, on 16th and 17th February, 2012.

The programme started with lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries followed by Bhavan’s Prayer. The welcome address was given by Honorary Secretary cum Correspondent, BVB and Honorary Secretary, BVC, Air cmde. N.D.N. Bhaskar Rao, VSM. The Hon. Secretary’s message was followed by address by the Chairman, Justice Dr.Y. Bhaskar Rao. He spoke on the importance of providing hygienic environment and its need in the present day to overcome health crisis. The Principal, Dr. Y. Ashok, in his speech welcomed the speakers and participants and hoped that the participants would benefit from the scientific lectures. The Convener of the symposium and Vice-Principal Dr.P.Uma presented the overview of the programme. She spoke on the importance of immunology in health care and also the latest discoveries in immunology. She listed out the various events and lectures that would be organized on these two days.


The convener’s speech was followed by felicitations to Dr.Gopal Reddy, Head, Department of Microbiology, Osmania University, for being conferred the Louis Pasteur Award and Prof. L. Venkateshwar Rao, Chairman, Board of studies, Department of Microbiology, Osmania University, for being awarded the best teacher prize for his contribution to teaching and research. The inaugural session came to an end with all the speakers congratulating the efforts of the post-graduate departments in organizing the national symposium.


Other invited speakers, Dr. D. N. Rao, Professor, Dept. of Biochemistry, AIIMS, New Delhi, Dr.Dipendra Kumar Mitra, Professor, Dept of Transplant Immunology and Immunogenetics, AIIMS, New Delhi, and Dr.B.Sashidhar Rao, Department of Biochemistry, O.U, Hyderabad also spoke on this occasion. A total of 80 delegates from different places and various institute like Asian Institute of Gastroenterology, BITS-Pilani Hyderabad Campus, IICT, Vasavi Medical and Research centre and universities like Kakatiya University, Hyderabad Central University and colleges like Vanitha Mahavidyalaya, CMR college of engineering, RBVRR women’s college and Pratibha degree college attended the programmes.

SEMINAR ON EMERGING TRENDS IN SCIENCE.

DAY-1 :21st OCTOBER

      2010 A two day national seminar on “Emerging trends in science” was organized by Bhavan’s Vivekananda College of Science, Humanities and Commerce, Sainikpuri, Secunderabad on 21st and 22nd October, 2010. The national seminar was held to commemorate the decennial year of the three post-graduate departments of computer science, Biochemistry and Microbiology

    The national seminar was inaugurated at College of Defense management auditorium, Sainikpuri, Secunderabad. The invited dignitaries are Dr. B. Sesikeran, Director, NIN, Hyderabad who was the chief guest, Dr. D. N. Rao, Professor, Dept. of Biochemistry, AIIMS, New Delhi and Dr.H.S.Savitri, Chairperson and Head, Department of Biochemistry, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru.

    The guests of honor included Dr. Gopal Reddy, Prof & Head, Dept. of Microbiology, Dr. L.V.Rao, Prof & Chairman, Board Of Studies(BOS) in Microbiology, Dr.B.Sashidhar Rao, Prof & Head, Dept. of. Biochemistry, Dr.S.Satyanarayan Singh, Chairman, BOS in Biochemistry, Dr.J.Shobhanaditya, Dr.Tajuddin, Prof & Head, Dept of Mathematics, and Dr.MV Ramana Murthy, Prof & Chairman, BOS in Computer Science, Osmania University(O.U).

    The programme started with lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries followed by Bhavan’s Prayer. The Convener of the national seminar and Vice-Principal Dr.P.Uma presented the overview of the programme. She said that the seminar would offer an excellent opportunity to the post-graduate students to interact with well known researchers and understand the recent developments in science. She stressed that the national seminar would provide an informative forum for both professionals and academic researchers in the domain of biotechnology and computer science

     The convener’s message was followed by the welcome address by Honorary Secretary cum Correspondent, BVB and Honorary Secretary, BVC, Air cmde. N.D.N. Bhaskar Rao, VSM who said that the seminar would be an ideal platform to promote and build aptitude for science among youngsters. He said that the students should take every opportunity to improve their technical and scientific skills by participating in seminars.

     Hon.Secretary’s message was followed by address by the Chairman, Justice Y. Bhaskar Rao. He spoke about the need to learn about the latest advancements in science like biotechnology, nanotechnology and their applicatins

    The Principal, Mr. Y. Ashok and the guests of honor also spoke on this occasion. The principal highlighted the various academic activities that are being organized by the college to motivate the students and inculcate competitive spirit in their fields of interest. He also congratulated the post-graduate departments for completing a successful decade in terms of research, results and academic achievements. Prof. Gopal Reddy, highlighted the importance of using information technology in understanding the microbial systems in his speech. Prof. L.V.Rao, mentioned the importance of microbes in our day-to-day life. Prof. Sashidhar Rao, stressed the need for trained human resource to meet the demands of the industry and research laboratories. All the speakers congratulated the efforts of the post-graduate departments in organizing the national seminar.

    In his inaugural speech, the chief guest of the programme, Dr. B. Sesikeran, Director, NIN, Hyderabad, said that there is a need for the Scientists who are settled in foreign countries to return to India and contribute to the prosperity of the nation. He also added that while money provided short term benefits, knowledge bank gives a long term benefit. Prof. D.N.Rao, in his speech, spoke on the need to develop newer drugs against the outbreak of new diseases.

    This was followed by a felicitation to the Chairman, Justice Dr. Y. Bhaskar Rao, on being conferred honorary doctorate for his achievements by Kakatiya University. The inaugural session ended with vote of thanks. It was followed by parallel scientific sessions of Life Sciences and Computer Scienc. The scientific sessions included two lectures in Life Sciences and one lecture in Computer Science.

 Programme in Life sciences

   The first lecture was on “Genetically modified crops, their risks and benefits” by Dr. B. Sesikeran. His lecture focused on the methods adapted for testing acute toxicity and subchronic toxicity of genetically modified foods. The talk also included the basic protocol to test GM foods and to determine the allergenicity of the food using bioinformatic approaches.

   The second lecture was on “Biodegradable Nano particle as vaccine targets for infectious disease” by Prof. D. N. Rao. The lecture started with the basic concepts of immune system and different methods employed to deliver the vaccines. He also explained the strategy adapted in his lab to develop a vaccine against the plague disease.

   The afternoon session started with the poster session by Post-graduate students and research scholars from various institutions. The poster session was categorized into two groups, one based on literature survey on the topic “Marine biology” and the other based on original research work. About 50 posters were displayed by the students and research scholars. The poster session was very well appreciated by the judges, Dr.D.N.Rao and Dr. Neti Girija, Dept. of Zoology, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University, Hyderabad.

 Programme in computer science

    Prof. DVSL Somayajulu, Professor & Head, Dept. of CSE, NIT, Warangal delivered a lecture on “Business Intelligence”. He emphasized on the role of Data Warehouse and Mining in Business decision making, Software Tools available for the implementation of Business Intelligence. It was followed by various competitions for the post graduate students which includes Paper Presentation, Debate and IT Quiz. The topic of the debate is “is it possible to practically implement the technical services at rural areas of India? “. There was a good response from students of our college and other colleges for all the events. Nearly 30 students took part in various competitions.

DAY-2: 22nd OCTOBER,2010

  The second day of the seminar began with parallel sessions in Life Sciences and Computer Science. The programme included three scientific lectures and student events like scientific writing and quiz programme.

Programme in life sciences

    The second day of the seminar started with scientific writing. The event was organized by Dr. J.Vidya. A simple scientific experimental result was shown as a power point presentation and the participants were asked to write a scientific report on the experiment. There was a good participation and 87 students took part.

    Scientific writing was followed by a guest lecture by Prof. H.S.Savithri. She spoke on “Proteins as Drug Targets”. She spoke on methods of target identification, techniques used in protein characterization, validation of drugs followed by pharmacological studies. The session was also attended by Prof. J. Shobhanadithya, O.U, Dr.D.N.Rao, Dr.V.Vijayalakshmi, NIN and Prof. C. Subramanyam, O.U. Students interacted enthusiastically with the speaker after the lecture. This was followed by preliminary round for Quiz in which more than 50 teams participated.

   The next session was oral paper presentation in which students and research scholars participated and presented their original research papers on diverse aspects like microbial productions, screening of microbes, genetic resistance in plants etc. There were 12 participants from various P.G. colleges and research institutes like IICT, and Department of genetics O.U., Hyderabad. The papers were judged by Dr V.Vijaya Lakshmi from NIN and Dr. Madhusudan Reddy from Palamuru University.

   The afternoon session began with the final round of Quiz. Eight teams were shortlisted for the final round. There were seven rounds which includes multiple choice questions, one word answers, animation, Fun round , choose your subject, Riddles and Rapid fire rounds.

 Programme in Computer Science

   The session started with the lecture by Dr. Jaydev Gyani, Head, Dept. of CSE, JITS(Affiliated to JNTUH), Warangal on “ASP.NET”. He covered different aspects of .NET technology, Comparison between traditional Web Development and ASP.NET. Highlight of the seminar was live demonstration of .NET 2007 with client/server based web pages development. It was followed by IT Quiz finals, consists of 6 teams. The quiz covered the topics of curriculum and latest trends in Computer Science.

   After noon session includes a lecture on “Grid Computing” by Prof. S. Ramachandram, Professor, Dept. of CSE, O.U. The lecture covered new technologies being used by corporate to provide better and efficient services to their customers. The seminar also highlighted on Cloud and Grid Computing aspects.

   The two day programme concluded with the valedictory function. Principal Mr. Y.Ashok addressed the gathering and congratulated all the participants and the winners. Mrs. K.Anuradha, Head, Dept.of Microbiology gave an overall review of the two day National seminar. This was followed by the prize distribution to winners of various events by Principal and Vice-principal. Mrs. K.V.B. Saraswathi, Head, Dept. of Computer Science proposed the vote of thanks. The session closed with the National Anthem.
