The Botany department was started in the year 1993 by Mrs. K. Vijayalakshmi Rao, with the introduction of the course Microbiology-Botany-Chemistry, followed by the Department of Geneticswith the introduction of the course Botany-Genetics-Chemistry. Further, growth to the department came in 1995, with the introduction of the course Microbiology-Genetics-Chemistry. In 1998, Botany-Genetics-Chemistry course was discontinued. The Department grew in 2002-03, with the integration of Dept. of Biotechnology. A new course was introduced: Biotechnology-Biochemistry-Chemistry. One of the important aspects of this department is to introduce new courses that enable students to achieve success in in modern areas of Biology. Taking this into consideration in 2007 a new course was introduced: Biotechnology- Genetics and Chemistry.
Facilities
The Department consists of four spacious and well-equipped laboratories, to conduct the prescribed practicals in Botany, Genetics and Biotechnology. The Department also has a separate Plant Tissue Culture laboratory with all the necessary equipment and infrastructure required for the aseptic culture of plants. The students are provided the necessary environment to enhance their interest and aspect towards the subject by providing an excellent UG Library. It is stocked with books and Journals in various Scientific fields. The students are encouraged to utilize these facilities to enhance their scientific skills.
Student Results

The average pass percentage for students each year is close to 100%, with the majority (over 50%) scoring distinction in Botany, Genetics and Biotechnology. In 2008 results for Biotechnology for all the three years was 100% and nearly cent percent results in Botany and Genetics, with most of the final year students scoring first division.

Achievements of Students

In 1997, students were taken on a field trip to the Tropical Botanical Gardens in Trivandrum to study medicinal plants as part of the elective paper in Medicinal Botany. Since then, every year students are taken to Botanical or Industrial tours depending upon the subject of their study. Recently, in  Nov 2008 students were taken to Kerala as part of their Edutainment, where they visited Spice Village in Tekkady ,tea gardens in Munnar and TBGRI in Trivandrum.
