The Department is involved in various activities for the benefit of the students and the faculty members. Students are taken to various field trips to enhance their theoretical knowledge with practical expertise. Botany students are taken to Botanical gardens to identify and collect samples of important flora for preparation of the herbaria. In 1997, students were taken on a field trip to the Tropical Botanical Garden in Trivandrum to study medicinal plants as part of the elective paper in Medicinal Botany. Since then, every year students are taken to various botanical or Industrial tours depending upon the subject of their study. Recently, in Nov 2008 students as part of their Edu-tainment were taken to Kerala, where they visited Spice Village in Tekkady ,tea gardens in Munnar and TBGRI in Trivandrum. Students of biotechnology were taken to Shantha Biotech to enhance their knowledge of Industrial technology and latest advancement in the field of interest.
Eminent Guest Lecturers are invited by the department to interact with the student and to introduce the students to various topics such as modern trends and technologies in the recent era in the field of science. Students are taken for interactive sessions in Research Institutes such as CCMB, CDFD and Institute of Genetics.
Faculty Members are encouraged to take various courses and attend seminars to enhance and update their knowledge in their field.
In October 2003, Mrs. K. Vijayalakshmi Rao, attended a seminar conducted by Department of Botany, Osmania University and made an oral presentation of problems faced by cultivators of medicinal plants.
In September 2002, Mrs. Kalpana, attended a Refresher Course conducted by Genetics Department, Osmania University.
Mrs. T.S. Rajini attended a seminar on Biotechnology, Biodiversity and Bio-enterprise conducted by Department of Zoology, Osmania University.
Dr. Jyothi Nair attended Refresher Courses conducted by Genetics Department, Osmania University, and by Hyderabad Central University in 2003.
Recently, Ms.R.Kavitha attended Technical program in Advanced Molecular Technique conducted by Dept. of Biotechnology, Loyola Academy for Degree and P.G.
The Department is environment conscious and believes in teaching its students the importance of protecting the environment for future generations. Since Aug 2005, every year the Department organizes a Plantation Day called “ greEnergy “ Program to promote the environmental awareness and have started a botanical garden of its own. As a part of the greEnergy project bio-diesel plants were planted around the campus to promote renewable source of energy. Keeping with the tradition in August 2006 the Department organized Environment Day ‘greEnergy II’, which included competitions in various categories related to environmental issues. Each year greEnergy has grown with the full support of the college management and students taking extensive interest to carry forth the tradition. In August 2007 the Department organized Environment Day greEnergy III an intercollegiate event where several colleges from the city participated in different competitions conducted by the Department. This year (2008), it became part of the intercollegiate event called Bhavanotsav -2008. The number of colleges participating not only grew but the number of events organized were also on a large scale .The event had a very positive effect on the students. |
