Inception and Growth
The Botany department was started in the year 1993 by Mrs. K. Vijayalakshmi Rao, with the introduction of the course Microbiology-Botany-Chemistry, followed by the Department of Geneticswith the introduction of the course Botany-Genetics-Chemistry. Further, growth to the department came in 1995, with the introduction of the course Microbiology-Genetics-Chemistry. In 1998, Botany-Genetics-Chemistry course was discontinued. The Department grew in 2002-03, with the integration of Dept. of Biotechnology with the introduction of a new course: Biotechnology-Biochemistry-Chemistry. One of the important aspects of this department is to introduce new courses that enable students to achieve success in the subject of their choice. Student’s interest and range of subject option available to them to pursue their interest is the up most priority. Taking this into consideration 2007 saw the emergence of new course Biotechnology- Genetics and Chemistry in this department.

Facilities

The Department consists of four spacious and well-equipped laboratories, facilitating the conduction of practicals in Botany, Genetics and Biotechnology. The Department also has a separate Plant Tissue Culture laboratory with all the necessary equipment and infrastructure required for the sensitive procedure. Laboratory procedures/ practical procedures prescribed by Osmania University are conducted in the department and the lecturers ensure that the students have a deep understanding of all the practical procedures conducted. The students are given the necessary environment to enhance their self interest and self study aspect towards the subject by providing an excellent UG Library. It is stocked with books and Journals in various Scientific fields for self study. The students are encouraged to utilize these facilities to enhance their scientific skills.

Student Results

The students of this department have always excelled in their chosen field of subject. The average pass percentage for students each year is close to 100%, with the majority (over 50%) scoring distinction in Botany, Genetics and Biotechnology. In 2008 results for Biotechnology for all the three years was 100% and nearly cent percent results in Botany and Genetics, with most of the final year students scoring first division.

Achievements of Students

Ms. Radha Girirajan (94-97) was awarded a Gold Medal in Botany, from Osmania University.

Departmental Activities

The Department is involved in various activities for the benefit of the students and the faculty members. Students are taken to various field trips to enhance their theoretical knowledge with practical expertise. Botany students are taken to Botanical gardens to identify and collect samples of important flora for preparation of the herbaria. In 1997, students were taken on a field trip to the Tropical Botanical Garden in Trivandrum to study medicinal plants as part of the elective paper in Medicinal Botany. Since then, every year students are taken to various botanical or Industrial tours depending upon the subject of their study. Recently, in  Nov 2008 students as part of their  Edu-tainment were taken to Kerala, where they visited Spice Village in Tekkady ,tea gardens in Munnar and TBGRI in Trivandrum. Students of biotechnology were taken to Shantha Biotech to enhance their knowledge of Industrial technology and latest advancement in the field of interest.

Eminent Guest Lecturers are invited by the department to interact with the student and to introduce the students to various topics such as modern trends and technologies in the recent era in the field of science. Students are taken for interactive sessions in Research Institutes such as CCMB, CDFD and Institute of Genetics.

Faculty Members are encouraged to take various courses and attend seminars to enhance and update their knowledge in their field.

In October 2003, Mrs. K. Vijayalakshmi Rao, attended a seminar conducted by Department of Botany, Osmania University and made an oral presentation of problems faced by cultivators of medicinal plants.

In September 2002, Mrs. Kalpana, attended a Refresher Course conducted by Genetics Department, Osmania University.

Mrs. T.S. Rajini attended a seminar on Biotechnology, Biodiversity and Bio-enterprise conducted by Department of Zoology, Osmania University.

Dr. Jyothi Nair attended Refresher Courses conducted by Genetics Department, Osmania University, and by Hyderabad Central University in 2003.

Recently, Ms.R.Kavitha attended Technical program in Advanced Molecular Technique conducted by Dept. of Biotechnology, Loyola Academy for Degree and P.G.

The Department is environment conscious and believes in teaching its students  the importance of protecting the environment for future generations. Since Aug 2005, every year the Department organizes a Plantation Day called “ greEnergy “ Program to promote the environmental awareness and have started a botanical garden of its own. As a part of the greEnergy project bio-diesel plants were planted around the campus to promote renewable source of energy. Keeping with the tradition in August 2006 the Department organized Environment Day ‘greEnergy II’, which included competitions in various categories related to environmental issues. Each year greEnergy has grown with the full support of the college management and students taking extensive interest to carry forth the tradition. In August 2007 the Department organized Environment Day greEnergy III an intercollegiate event where several colleges from the city participated in different competitions conducted by the Department. This year (2008), it became part of the intercollegiate event called Bhavanotsav -2008. The number of colleges participating not only grew but the number of events organized were also on a large scale .The event had a very positive effect on the students.
