Talk by Dr.Goverdhan- 27.12.2011
Dr.C.Goverdhan, an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Osmania University, gave a demonstrative lecture on 'Knowledge Computing Machine'.
The prime aim of the lecture was to introduce a search engine 'Wolframalpha'. This is a software for Mathematics developed by a physicist Prof.Wolfram.
Using this search engine we can see the geometrical aspect of every problem. Discussing the geometrical aspect of each and every problem in the class room is not possible. In this search engine if we type a problem we get not only a detailed solution but also geometric figure which explains the geometrical aspect. It is impossible to draw the graph for many problems. This search engine plots thousands of points in seconds and plots the graph in a fraction of a second. This is not possible manually. Unless it is a commonly used figure we do not know the shape of a curve. Higher order equation cannot be plotted manually but the search engine can give us a figure of higher order equation quickly.
Real analysis which is one of the most difficult topic in Mathematics can also be geometrically interpreted using this search engine.
Many examples were demonstrated by Dr.C.Goverdhan using the internet. The students also actively participated and had a lot of queries which were answered patiently by the speaker.
This session will help the students as well as the teachers to enjoy the beauty of the king of Sciences and the Queen of Arts that is 'MATHEMATICS'.

Madhava Mathematics Competition
On Jan 8th, 2012, the Madhava Mathematics Competition was conducted in our college.
This competition is a 3 hour written exam in Mathematics. It is conducted by the Department of
Mathematics, S.P. College, Pune and Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, TIFR, Mumbai.
This exam is conducted for undergraduate students in Mathematics to motivate them to pursue
higher studies in Mathematics. Students who do well in the exam, will be sent for a summer camp
for Mathematics to some University. Students will also be given many cash awards.
In Hyderabad it was conducted at 3 centres.
1. St.Francis College, Begumpet
2. St.Ann's college, Mehdipatnam
3. Bhavan's Vivekananda College for Science, Humanities and Commerce, Sainikpuri.
It was very motivating to see many students attending the exam in Mathematics on a Sunday.
Lecture by Prof. K. Satyanarayana on Mathematicians & Mathematics- 22.12.2011
On the occasion of the birth anniversary of the great Indian Mathematician, Sir Srinivasa Ramanujan, a lecture was organized by the Department of Mathematics & Statistics. Prof.K.Satyanarayana, Retd. Professor from Osmania University & currently The Coordinator of Mathematics at Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies, IIIT,Hyderabad, gave a talk on
'Mathematicians & Mathematics'.
Prof.K.Satyanarayana gave a power point presentation about Sir Srinivasa Ramanujan's life and his work in Mathematics. Sir Ramanujan made many conjectures which came to his mind in flashes of intuition. Sir Ramanujan made contributions to: Number Theory, Continued Fractions, Summation of Series, Elliptic Functions, Modular equations, Zeta functions, Doubly periodic functions.
Discussing the difference between conjecture, theorem, lemma & corollary Prof.Satyanarayana said ' A conjecture is a statement that does not have a proof or evidence, but we still believe it is true. If a conjecture is proved it becomes a theorem. Lemma is also a result. It is sometimes a reason to prove the theorem. Corollary is a result which can be derived directly from a theorem.
Discussing the applications of Elliptic functions, Prof.Satyanarayana said, Elliptic functions are used in elliptic cryptology. This is useful in Defence. A lot of research is going on in this field. Zeta functions are also very useful.
A famous example of Sir Srinivasa Ramanujan's Knowledge and love for numbers is a story as follows: when Sir Ramanujan was on his death bed, Prof.G.H.Hardy went to meet him. Just to start a conversation he said ' I have come to meet you in a taxi which has the dullest number - 1729'. Immediately Sir Ramanujan commented that this is the least number which can be written as the sum of the cubes of two numbers in two different ways.
This shows his genius & understanding of numbers. Sir Ramanujan always told that his friends were numbers.
Sir Ramanujan enumerated over 600 Mathematical identities without proofs in his famous notebooks.
After talking about Sir Ramanujan, Prof. Satyanarayana spoke about some results in Mathematics. He discussed some results in graph theory & discussed the pigeon hole principle in detail. The talk was highly appreciated by the students of all the 3years of degree.
The professor appreciated our students' response to the talk.

EXTENSION LECTURE IN STATISTICS
The first of the series of extension lectures was organized by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics on the 26th of July 2011. The guest speaker was Mrs.Seena Biju who spoke on ‘Sample size in Testing of Hypothesis’. Mrs.Seena Biju, is currently affiliated to Manipal University, Dubai, working as a senior Lecturer in Statistics in the Dept. of Management Studies. Earlier she was working in our college for ten years (1997 – 2007) in the Dept of Statistics.
The talk was very well received by the students. She stressed on
- Why is it so important to select the correct sample size?
- What needs to be considered for sample size determination?
- When do these studies get constrained?
The talk was a completely example oriented and interactive session which kept the students alert and interested. Secondly, this is an area which the students learn in their curriculum in their second year.
Departmental Activities
Faculty members of our department have been attending Seminars, National Conferences, and Workshops organized by various Universities and Colleges, such as:
- XII CONGRESS by A.P Society for Mathematical Sciences hosted by Osmania University.
- National Seminar on "Algebra - its applications" organized by Osmania University.
- National Conference on "New Trends in Number Theory" organized at Osmania University.
- Workshop on "Linear algebra and Analysis" hosted by Hyderabad Central University.
- Seminar on "Tools of Statistics in Computational Techniques" at Jagruti College (affiliated to Osmania University).
- International conference on "Advancement of Statistics" at International School of Business (ISB), Gachibowli, Hyderabad.
- International Congress of Mathematics – a talk about a book “Proof of the Book” by Prof. Gunter M Ziegler, Technical University, Berlin along with students on 23rd August 2010.
- Members of our Department have also given paper presentations on topics of Number Theory at National Conference on
"New Trends in Number Theory" organized at Osmania University.
- The Department also has a credit of its member publishing a paper in Number Theory in International Journal of Inequalities in Pure and Applied Mathematics (JIPAM).
- Department conducts many programs to motivate students like: - Class room seminars to encourage their analytical skills and to stimulate their thinking and develop confidence.
- Power Point Paper presentation in Mathematics and Statistics topics in which normally large numbers of students take active and keen participation. Prizes are given to first three teams.
- The Math Quiz “ASYMPTOTE” is being conducted regularly since 2004 and in 2005 we had 108 teams who participated in the preliminary round of which 8 teams were selected for final which is held every year on 22nd December - Mathematician Ramanujan's birthday. Prizes given to first three teams.
- Inter college competition in Math quiz “ASYMPTOTE” was conducted in the year 2007. More than 30 colleges participated.
- Again under “BHAVANOSTAV - August 2008” our department has conducted math quiz, paper presentation in both mathematics and statistics. Around 10 colleges participated in mathematics paper presentation. More than 15 teams participated in quiz prelimis. Around 5 colleges participated in statistics paper presentation.
- Apart from the mid-term and pre-final examination conducted by college, every member is involved in conducting monthly/topic wise tests, giving regular assignments and conducting remedial classes for weak students.
