Inception and Growth

Microbiology department was established in 1993 with MBC combination followed by MGC in 1996 and MBiC in 1999. It blossomed into a full fledged Department with a Masters program, M.Sc Microbiology in the year 2000.  Research activity was initiated with summer projects in 2004 and  M.Phil. / Ph.D. Guidance in  2005 with affiliation to JNTU, Bharathidasan university, Annamalai University, Sri Krishna Devaraya University and Rayalaseema University.

Mission

The mission of the department is to provide the best possible training in diverse areas of Microbiology. The department’s approach is holistic as it constantly strives to upgrade students’ knowledge, practical skills and communication skills. The research activity of the department for UG, PG, MPhil and PhD students includes a group of able passionate learners from diverse backgrounds and this provides real strength to the department.

Goals & objectives of the Department

To provide high-quality graduate and post graduate programs which are both skill and knowledge based.

To serve as a centre for a vibrant, intellectually stimulating environment for learning.

To accomplish significant research in all fields of Microbiology in collaboration with National & International Institutes.

To support generation of scientific knowledge that serves as a precursor to foster a desire for development.

To serve as a base for information collaboration and technical expertise in microbiology.

Facilities

Microbiology labs are well equipped with basic and sophisticated equipment. The department has highly qualified and experienced faculty who motivate the students and encourage their participation in extra curricular activities.
Staff Achievements
Mrs.K.Anuradha and Dr.Naga Padma presented a poster on Plakett-Burman design for effective screening of nitrogen sources for Polygalacturonase production by Aspergillus awamori MTCC 9166 at the National conference on Nanobitechnology:Emerging trends and applications in microbiology organized by MGNIRSA-4-6th Feb. 2011.

Dr.Naga Padma presented a posters on
      a. Studies on Microbial diversity of Vermicomposting bins.
      b. Solubilization of inorganic and organic phosphate sources by Actinomycetes from diverse sources
At the National conference on Nanobiotechnology:  Emerging trends and applications in Microbiology organized by MGNIRSA-4-6th Feb. 2011.

Dr.Sarada presented a poster on Strain improvement of Bacillus strain Bvc 501 for enhanced production of Alkaline protease at the National conference on Nanobiotechnology:  Emerging trends and applications in microbiology organized by MGNIRSA-4-6th Feb. 2011.

Student Results and Career Prospects

The department has the credit of securing the first rank in M.Sc, Microbiology course for two consecutive years. Students of the Department have also been securing GATE/CSIR fellowships almost every year since 2002.

Some of the students have been pursuing their research work in reputed institutes and organizations like CCMB,CDFD,IICT and NIN .

Some of the students have joined reputed industries as Microbiologists.
Departmental Activities

The department strives to inculcate a scientific temper among students. To achieve this, the department has been conducting an annual    lecture series “Gyan Tarangini Vyakhyan Mala” since the inception of P.G. courses. This is to encourage    creativity and skills, to enrich their knowledge and to interact with distinguished scientists.

The Department organized intercollegiate Life sciences meet in December 2006..

The Department organized “Teacher workshop on Molecular Techniques” in 2004 to give hands-on experience in     molecular biology protocols.

The Department conducts model CSIR test every year.

The Department initiated summer projects from 2005. Summer projects are open for in-house and other college     students at U.G, P.G and M.Phil levels.

The faculty is actively involved in research activities for Ph.D programs.

Scientific paper publications and book publications are a part of departmental activities.
